By proclamation of President Obama, this October is national arts and humanities month. At UCBA this month we will be celebrating along with many other colleges across the nation.
If you wish to join in on the festivities, you can attend the “Lunch with the Arts and Humanities” which takes place on Wednesday, October 26, at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UCBA library. Other events here during the month included a jazz session on Oct. 5 and a mini-film festival on Oct. 10. On Oct. 18, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center on the Uptown Campus, there will be a philosophical discussion about war.
Lunch with the Arts and Humanities will begin with a free lunch, followed by presentations by faculty and students. The events during the lunch will include visual art with David Hartz, poetry with Claudia Skutar, Humanities in Action with Jody Ballah and the study abroad programs of Foreign Languages, poetry and jazz with Michael Sanders, poetry with Robert Murdoch, visual arts with Julie Mitchell, a presentation of European studies by Krista Sigler, poetry with Kevin Oberlin, and finally original music with Mike Roos.
The event is sponsored by the Dean’s office and the Liberal Arts program. According to event coordinator Professor Rhonda Pettit, who teaches creative writing and is an avid proponent of the arts, the goal of the event is to “…make students and other campus citizens aware of the arts and humanities culture across disciplines and departments here. We hope this effort will extend to their lives beyond college, encouraging them to be lifelong participants in the arts and humanities.”

National Arts and Humanities Month, as its name implies, doesn’t just limit itself to the University of Cincinnati. There are other events going on across the country. Other events include the Constella Festival on October 13 in Cincinnati, Draw on the Walls on October 14 in Dayton, and Creative Conversations: Creative Conversations at the Arnoff Center on October 25.
