There will be a new class available at UCBA this Spring Semester: Introduction to European Studies (EUST 1001), to be taught by Professor Krista Sigler. The subject will be “Europe in Crisis: The Twentieth Century.”
Among the topics covered will be the world wars, communism, and the current economic crisis in Europe. Classes will meet on Wednesdays from 6-8:50 p.m. While covering history, course content will also include an element of literature, languages, and political science woven in.
Professor Sigler said she is “embracing a very low-cost model of the course, so students will expect only one (modest) book purchase for the class.”
Open to all students, the class will provide credit for UC Breadth of Knowledge requirements in Historical Perspectives and Diversity and Culture, in addition to being a step towards the European Studies certificate.
This is an interdisciplinary certificate, owned by McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, and earned by taking classes with a European theme.
Currently, the European Studies Certificate requires just 24 credit hours, with the majority of the courses (including languages, literature, and history) being those that UCBA students are already taking or have already taken, according to Professor Sigler, who is the UCBA Coordinator of European Studies.
Based on their prior courses, UCBA students who will go on to seek a Bachelor’s at the Uptown campus could very easily find themselves within a course or two of the certificate. For the record, Introduction to European Studies is one of only two courses that are mandatory for the certificate; as you will see from the course explanation in the brochure, the certificate is designed to fit easily within a student’s major course of study.
