SAC reaches out to evening students

While day students are able to participate in such events as RWC’s annual “Spring Fling,” evening students can now expect a more concentrated attempt from Student Life and SAC to meet their needs, specifically, fresh food. The results of a survey among evening students two years ago indicated that nighttime activities did not interest them, but having food available was important. Consequently, members of SAC are volunteering their time and homemade baked goods to stage bake sales several evenings this winter in an attempt to extend their program efforts to RWC students attending night classes.

“Bringing activities to the night students is both a priority and a challenge because we don’t know what they want,” says Lisa Densford, SAC President. Ms. Densford understands that evening students are different from those students attending day classes and feels that SAC can serve them best through “outreach and hospitality.”

Proceeds from the evening bake sales will fund the nighttime “Fruit Buffet” this spring. In addition, SAC hopes to offer fresh sandwiches and cookouts occasionally for those who are often rushing to school from work and have not had time to eat.

As the campus department under which SAC functions, Student Life oversees both SAC and Student Government functions. Its philosophy is focused on helping RWC students get the most out of their college experience at RWC.

Student Life is the only department at RWC that is open till 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, in order for evening students to buy UC sports tickets, obtain student IDs, and check out equipment for the Student Lounge. Shelia Yates-Mattingly, Student Life Coordinator, states proudly, “It’s an attitude.”
