Bearcats Take SMU, Extend Defensive Streak

The UC men’s basketball team beat both SMU (62-54), ranked number 23 in the country, and South Florida (63-58) this past week.

So far, the Bearcats are the only American Athletic Conference team to beat coach Larry Brown’s SMU squad.  And they have done it twice.

Jermaine Sanders scored 15 points in the SMU game.  Farad Cobb and Troy Caupain each added 14 points for the Bearcats.  Cobb also scored 16 points against South Florida.

Against SMU, Cincinnati clung to the lead, building it to 57-50 with 41 seconds left and holding on with Troy Caupain’s breakaway layup after a scramble for the ball with eight seconds left, sealing the win.

Thus far, the Bearcats are now third in the American Athletic Conference.  UC is 13-1 at home and has won 31 of the last 33 home games dating back to the start of the 2013-14 campaign.

Cincinnati has held all 23 opponents this season under 70 points, as well as 26 consecutive foes.  The streak of 26 straight games holding the opponent under 70 is the longest in the nation.
