As flames soar through the air, swoosh, you can hear the sound of the ball of fire bouncing back in your hand. This daredevil stunt is known as “Fire Poi.”
UC student Lucien Hammons engages in Fire Poi as one of his hobbies. The practice, which originated in Hawaii in the 1940s, simply consists of chains with Kevlar wicks, knotted into balls attached to the strings.
According to Lucien, “Fire Poi is more like a yoga. It’s a relaxing hobby.”
He first practiced Fire Poi two years ago at age 20. Although he had developed excellent skills at the practice, he says performing is not something he would want to do. He just does it for fun. Everyone has an outlet, something to do to have a stress free zone, and Fire Poi is Lucien’s.
While the practice can be somewhat dangerous, there are things you can do to ensure your safety. You should tie your hair back, wear flame retardant gloves, and avoid loose fitting clothes.
If you are interested in Fire Poi, you should participate in a group first, so that if something risky happens, the situation can be quickly controlled. If Lucien Hammons can fire up the poi, you can too.
Don’t be afraid to be a dare devil. For once you might find it highly enjoyable and relaxing, just as Lucien does.
