Disability Services Testing New Device for Dyslexic Students

Every day new technologies help to make life easier for disabled individuals, and the RWC Disability Services Office is currently trying out a new device to assist students with dyslexia, a learning disorder defined by difficulty reading and spelling. One student benefiting from the new device is Tara Hill. Hill discovered she was dyslexic in her first year at RWC but has not let it hinder her ability to learn. Currently in her sixth year here, she is studying Computer Support Technology.

Hill has recently been given the benefit of testing the new K Reader Mobile, a device designed to assist dyslexic students by taking a picture of a document and reading it out loud.

She has been using the K Reader for about two months now and says that it is very helpful. She is able to do more work on her own during class, without having to rely on Disability Services for any documents she needs to read.

With the advent of this new technology, Hill will continue her education here with greater ease and an appreciation for these technologies that every day benefit those with learning disorders like dyslexia.
