I am nauseated. Today’s idea of rap is literally making me sick. You don’t believe me? You are about to see my lunch. I think we may have all gotten used to some of the ideas of mass murders, crack slangin’, and other terms in reference to the female sex, not quite fit for print, but the game has just gone overboard.”Grillz”? Nelly and Pall Wall teamed up to make this song about the infamouse teeth jewels that some artists have come to love more than their original pearly whites. Okay, I kind of like seeing them because they are a bit unique, but come on now. How can we connect if they are rapping about dentures that cost more than my house? What is going on?
Thankfully, as some parts of the industry are getting lost in the middle of left field, there are others who hold down the basics of good beat and clever (that’s right, smart) lyrics.
Thank you, David Banner! Although “Baptized in Dirty Water” left a little to be desired, I found his May album “Verbal Walker” to be a refreshing dip into what originaly made hip-hop great. The beats will get you tapping, and the synths will keep you moving, all the while crushing your head with crazy rhymes. Do yourself a favor: take a pass on “Grillz” and pick up “Verbal Walker.
