Deadlines for RWC’s two summer study abroad programs are fast approaching. The RWC Summer British Study Abroad program is taking a three and half week trip to Ireland and England this June, and the deadline for application is just a week away on February 1.
The trip includes two 3-credit hour courses, and any financial aid can apply to the trip. The trip is scheduled to depart June 12, visit London, Harlaxton Manor, Sligo, and Dublin, with a return on July 5.
RWC English Professor Ruth Benander, one of two faculty who will be leading the trip, said that, with an estimated cost of $2,500, which includes room, board, airfare, and other transportation, this is a relatively inexpensive trip, as study abroad goes.
The courses offered include an English course on the mythology of Ireland taught by Prof. Benander, and a drawing class for non-majors focusing on drawing on the “mythic journey,” led by Prof. John Wolfer.
The mythology class will center on the myths of Ireland and their influences on modern literature and culture. The drawing course is geared towards the beginner but has something of interest for an artist of any skill level. Time in this course will be spent presenting basic ideas of drawing and visual understanding, followed by trips to relevant museums. The courses will be presented in depth at Harlaxton Manor and continue with a week long tour of Ireland.
Also quickly approaching, on March 1, is the application deadline for the Study Abroad trip to Costa Rica, a two-week intensive language course, aimed at improving Spanish proficiency and a knowledge of Latin American culture.
Students will live with a local family while taking instruction in language and culture and then take afternoon excursions that will include a butterfly farm, two volcanoes, and a weekend visit to what Prof. Benander called one of the most beautiful beaches on the Pacific coast.
Students interested should act quickly, because there is only room on this trip for a maximum of twelve students.
