Video games: Dante’s Inferno heats up in Devil May Cry 3

Dante returns for more hell-raising action than ever before seen in Devil May Cry 3. This time we meet Dante in his store before he has even opened it for business, much less picked a name for it. Without any warning, a mysterious man walks into the store and asks, “Are you Dante, son of Sparda?”

Then, without warning, the man flips Dante’s desk after delivering an invitation from Dante’s brother, Vergil. When Dante gets up, he is attacked by Hell’s jailers. There is one for each of the seven sins: pride, lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, and wrath. When he gets outside, Dante witnesses the rising of the tower, Temen-ni-gru, the link between Hell and Earth.

The action in the latest installment of the Devil May Cry series has it all. As usual the half-demon Dante is packing his dual pistols, Ebony and Ivory, along with his sword. The Devil Trigger, found in all the other games, is also available after Dante’s first fight with his brother. The Devil Trigger allows Dante to transform into a full demon and at the same time regain any lost health.

Probably the best change that CAPCOM made to the game is the different fighting styles that you can use. The only problem with it is that you can only change between missions and at Time God statues.

The first of the styles is Sword Master. As the name implies, you use close combat weapons like the sword, Rebellion, or the triple nunchuk, Cerberus. While using Sword Master you are able to perform special moves with close range weapons.

The next style is Gunslinger. Gunslinger is similar in concept to the Sword Master, except you use ranged weapons such as the dual, semi-auto handguns Ebony and Ivory or the rocket launcher, Kalina Ann.

The third style is called Trickster. The Trickster style allows Dante to perform various acrobatic moves such as a wall run, rapid dash, or a teleportation directly behind the enemy. There are three other styles, two of which must be won during boss battles.

The weapons Dante uses vary and are quite unique outside of most of the firearms. For instance, he can use a triple nunchuk infused with an icy demonic spirit or the “electric” guitar formed from the body and spirit of a succubus named Nevan. The most unique firearm is a demon world crossbow known as Artemis.

All in all, I’d rate this game an eight point five out of ten.
