To help commemorate Black History Month, the Office of Student Life held a bake sale on Feb. 1 in the Muntz Lobby. The sale featured authentic dessert recipes from The African American Heritage Cookbook: Traditional Recipes and Fond Remembrances from Alabama’s Renowned Tuskegee Institute, compiled by Carolyn Quick Tillery. There were also several quizzes designed to test students’ knowledge and heighten their awareness of African American history.
Students and staff volunteers tried their hand at preparing the traditional recipes, many of which were included in the curriculum taught by Dr. George Washington Carver at the Tuskegee Institute.
Some of the desserts available were Dr. Carver’s candies, my grandmother’s pound cake, gingerbread with Chantilly cream, and key lime pie. All proceeds from the sale went to The Freedom Center.
