The presidential election is looming on the horizon and also in the air are all the issues. One of the most controversial and ongoing debates is over abortion.
Luckily both candidates do not have much to say about the new abortion pill because it was just approved for US use at the end of September.
The pill is known in France as RU-486; it has been approved in 15 countries and is used by 620,000 European women. In the US the pill will be marketed as Mifeprex, and for the Pro-Choicers this is a magnificent victory after a 12-year battle.
This brings a new privacy to women who decide to have an abortion. Instead of sometimes having to walk through picket lines, fearing for one’s life, a woman can go to a doctor’s office.
It is obvious that I am a Pro-Choice advocate, but why? I just think it is absolutely ludicrous that a stranger could have the right to tell me that I can or cannot have a child. I understand it is a wonderful blessing to have a baby, and I believe it will be the most important thing I do in this life, but those thoughts do not let me neglect the fact that women should have a choice. We definitely were not given a choice whether we wanted to be female, but we should be able to decide whether we have the ability to rear a child, give it up for adoption, or not have a child. What personal choices these are, and yet some people say that a woman should have no rights once she is pregnant. Does this make sense? Would you really not want to have a choice?
I will probably never use this new pill, but I think for women this is a fabulous advance toward more reproductive choices. I am a person all about principles, and this is another one very important to me because I am female. To me, it is being able to choose about my body and my life.
If you have any questions concerning Mifeprex, please contact a physician.
