Fingerhut reveals first goal of 10-Year Plan

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut has revealed the first goal of his 10-Year Plan for Higher Education in Ohio. Fingerhut recently stated that he would release each primary goal along with the measurements that have been proposed to review the success of the University System of Ohio. On November 2, Fingerhut released a preview of his goal of Education Attainment. “The University System of Ohio will lead the development of a highly educated workforce capable of meeting the needs of existing enterprises and creatively leading the development and growth of new enterprises,” Fingerhut stated in the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) press release.

Fingerhut later went on to describe his first primary plan. “We are in a position today to transform our higher educational system into the engine of change for Ohio’s economy. By measuring our total postsecondary enrollment, the total degrees awarded by our institutions, the number of undergraduate enrollees age 25 and older, and the total undergraduate degrees awarded to first generation college students, we can know that we are creating an innovative and skilled workforce that can compete on a global scale.”

Fingerhut was designated by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland to develop the goals and strategies for the University System of Ohio’s 10-year plan. Earlier Fingerhut had indicated that the public would soon get a preview regarding his vision and goals of the 10-year plan.

“For months, leaders from across Ohio have been engaged in working to develop the goals and strategies for the University System of Ohio’s 10-year plan,” Fingerhut said. “I want to begin to share the proposed goals for our higher education system with all Ohioans so this truly will be a collective vision.” When the plan is completed, Fingerhut will submit it to Governor Strickland for approval and implementation.

Governor Strickland and the Ohio General Assembly approved an increased budget for higher education earlier this year. They also froze college and university tuitions for two years.
