Immature? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Vulgar? Without question. Funny as hell? You bet.MacGruber, the title character of “MacGruber,” is the only American Hero to ever hold the rank of Army Ranger, Green Beret and Navy Seal. He has a paltry 16 Purple Hearts, three Congressional Medals of Honor and seven Presidential Medals of Bravery. He’s been on so many tours of duty in so many godforsaken countries one would think he was pushing seventy. So basically he’s a lean, mean killing machine, right? Well, kind of.
The Premise: MacGruber (Will Forte) is back in the game after being dead for ten years (Oh, okay. His wife was murdered by his arch nemesis, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), at their wedding, and he just let everyone think he was dead.). He’s called into service after Cunth, now a respected businessman, is believed to have stolen a nuclear warhead for reasons unknown.
His team consists of Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and his beleaguered straight man, Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe), whom he despises and ridicules initially, but grows to love and respect by the closing credits.
The three are in a race against the clock to locate Cunth, the missing warhead and, ultimately, save the day.
Easier said than done when MacGruber spends the majority of the movie acting like a jackass, getting his team into hot water and then asking them for various objects lying around them, only to use said objects to make something completely useless for the task at hand (Seriously, how did this guy become a national hero?).
There are also quite a few cringe-inducing moments along the way that had me hiding my eyes behind my hands, but still laughing all the while.
The Bottom Line: This movie is going to be either a “hate it” or “love it” kind of deal. It’s immature and crude, and for that, it doesn’t make any apologies. Be forewarned. If you are offended by vulgarity in ANY form (and I do mean any), you should 100 percent skip this movie! But, as long as you know that you are going to see a movie that is dumb (sometimes dumb can be very, very funny), and doesn’t try to be anything more than what it is, a glorified SNL sketch, chances are your sides will hurt from laughing.
