Dental Hygiene Program gives back to kids with no insurance

Kids with no dental insurance from the St. Bernard, Elmwood Place, and Mt. Healthy school districts will have a chance to get free dental screenings and x-rays on February 15, in the RWC Dental Hygiene Clinic. The Dental Hygiene Program here is co-sponsoring this act of good will along with the Cincinnati Dental Society for “Give Kids a Smile” day.

The program has been established with the sponsorship of the American Dental Association, and hundreds of children are expected to show. The Clinic has thirty-four chairs and plenty of Dental Hygiene students to accommodate them.

Along with students of the program, there will be professors and numerous dental professionals from the community volunteering their services.

Once the kids have had their x-rays taken, those needing sealants (a procedure to prevent cavities) will be able to return at a later datae and have the process done, free of charge. Providing this allows the children to have their teeth cleaned, and the dental students can practice their sealant procedures, preparing them to become dental hygienists once they obtain their Associate’s degree in Applied Science.

This is the first year this service has been offered, but Dental Hygiene Department Chair Janelle Schierling feels confident that “if successful, and I’m sure it will be, we’ll do this event every year.
