Rad Tech students state champs in Quiz Competition

The faculty, staff and students of the RWC Radiologic Technology Program attended the 67th Annual Meeting of the Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists (OSRT) on April 19-22, in Dublin, Ohio, and came away with a first prize in much anticipated Student Quiz Bowl Competition. Twenty-two second-year students attended the meeting along with four first-year students. The second year students participated in the Quiz Bowl Competition. The team from RWC won first place by going undefeated throughout the double-elimination tournament.

Team members began practicing for the competition during Autumn Quarter 2006 and worked very hard for their victory, according to RWC Rad Tech Professor Angie Arnold. “They often stayed after class and came in before class to practice, and they even came into school to practice on their spring break!” she explained.

The quiz bowl team members and team advisors dedicated their win to Department Chair, Professor Tracy Herrmann, who could not attend the conference. The first call made after the victory was to her, and according to Professor Arnold, everyone shouted, “We’re number one!”

For their win, Quiz Bowl team members received a free one-year membership to the OSRT as radiographers, and a $100 check for the program. The program will keep the rotating first place plaque on display in the classroom for the upcoming year, Arnold said, and will return to the conference next year to defend the title.

The program also received a plaque that will be on display permanently in the classroom to commemorate the win. As a special surprise, all second-year RWC Rad Tech students were given the following Monday off of clinicals so they could rest and reflect on the successful weekend.

Additionally, second year student Jaymie Barreto submitted a poster for the scientific poster display competition. Her poster was well received by the judges, according to Arnold, and they suggested she research the topic even further and submit it next year for the radiographer essay and/or poster display competition.

Prior to the conference, first year student Paul Hein was selected to serve as an OSRT Student Intern for the 2007-08 year. As a Student Intern Paul will serve on committees, attend OSRT Board of Directors meetings, and participate in the leadership of the Society. “[We’re] very proud of his selection,” Arnold said “and [look] forward to his professional representation of the program and RWC during the upcoming year.”

At the Honors Banquet on Saturday April 21, first year student, Marla Holman was awarded a $300 grant from the OSRT Educational Foundation. This money may be used for tuition, fees, books, uniforms, etc.

RWC Assistant Professor Julie Gill served as Co-Chair of the Annual Meeting, Student Liaison, and Recording Secretary of the OSRT Board.

Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Professor Sharon Keegan served as Co-Chair of the OSRT Student Quiz Bowl Committee, and as a member of the OSRT Board.

Clinical Coordinator Heather Moore presented a one-hour lecture at the conference, served on the Quiz Bowl Committee, and as a newly appointed member of the OSRT Board.

Associate Professor and Allied Health Department Chair Tracy Herrmann, served as Co-Chair of the Public Relations Committee, and she was recently hired as the OSRT Financial Manager.

Assistant Professor and Program Director Angie Arnold presented a one-hour lecture at the conference, and served as Co-Chair of the OSRT Continuing Professional Education Committee.

“It was such a proud weekend for the program and the college!” Professor Arnold exclaimed. “The students, faculty and staff of the Radiologic Technology Program represented the college in a professional manner. The students attended professional presentations, networked with students and faculty from programs throughout the state of Ohio, and even managed to have some fun!

“Again, we couldn’t be more proud of all of our students and their accomplishments during the conference. It was an amazing and very emotional weekend for us all, and we were thrilled to return to RWC as state champs!
