Students Share Ideas in First “Dish With the Dean

On Wednesday, October 20, RWC Dean Cady Short-Thompson hosted the first “Dish with the Dean” in the Muntz Lobby and afterwards helped swear in this year’s officers for the RWC Student Government. The event was designed to allow students to share with the Dean directly ideas and opinions about the changes coming to RWC. In a short amount of time, the students at the event discussed many new proposals.

Ideas included a fax machine for students, a massage chair during the year for students to relax, and more food expansion at the cafeteria. Students also proposed more outside tables for sitting and eating, improvement of the basketball court, and a little gym of weights and equipment for students to use.

They also suggested that smokers have a better place to smoke with more places to put their cigarettes when done, a variety of school activities from a movie or a small activity allowing the students to relax and recline while at RWC, and an efficient way to remove the snow without removing parking spots for the students.

“I appreciated the students’ ideas, questions, and thoughts about how to improve the student experience here at RWC,” the Dean explained afterwards in an email.

“I thought we had a good crowd for the first time. I hope more students will find ways to introduce themselves to me as I really do love to be around students-their energy and optimism are contagious and fuel me. It’s why I became a professor in the first place.”

After the discussion with the Dean, RWC Student Government Executive members were sworn in as official officers. The Dean spoke shortly on the benefits of being an executive member of Student Government.

There will be more Dishes with the Dean, with the next one scheduled for January 31 between 4:30-5:30 p.m. This event will primarily be for evening students to have a way to communicate with the Dean.

Another date will be April 20 between 11:30-12:30. The hope is to have a Dish with the Dean every quarter. However, more comments for the Dean can be placed in the talk boxes around the campus.

“I want the students to know that I listen and work hard to make improvements for them. Our college’s faculty, staff, and administration are committed to providing the best possible experience for students-educationally and otherwise. We want our students to love it here as much as we do.
