Springing from the already strong sense of community among the College’s military veterans, RWC Veterans On Campus seeks to create an informal group with which veterans can identify. The group is led by UC Police Officer Jeff Polly and RWC Director of Enrollment Services Chris Powers, both of whom are veterans. Powers notes, “it’s good to have community camaraderie. That’s what this group is for.”
Composed of students, faculty and staff, the group provides a place for the College’s veterans to discuss, network, and hangout in a relaxed atmosphere among a group of their military peers.
Nine-year Army veteran and current pre-business student/member Dan Hof shared his thoughts on the group. “It’s a good opportunity for vets to sit around, air out some issues, and discuss topics that affect us here at school,” he explained.
With no formal recruiting process, Officer Polly says he can usually pick out a veteran in the halls. “It may be a haircut or the way they carry themselves,” he said. “Usually I’ll just go up to them, ask them if they are a veteran and see if they’d like to come to a meeting.”
The group is set in the kind of informal meeting style that would serve as the perfect model to anyone seeking to create a similar conversation. Veterans On Campus has created a group whose advantageous and relaxed atmosphere is truly an admirable achievement.
Building a better understanding and providing a communal place for the College’s veterans to get together, Veterans On Campus meets once a month during the academic year.
