Let’s go to the fair

Are you ready for this coming job fair? Well get ready because it’s on its way. Wednesday, April 18 is the 2012 Career and Job Fair from 10:30am to 1:30pm. It will take place on the first floor of Muntz Hall. Thirty different employers will be there to talk about internships, different volunteer positions and paths you can take within your field of study. So now that you know a bit about the fair, what you should do before it gets here? Before the fair you need to do three things to get yourself ready. First, update your resume. If you need help all you have to do is go to the Career Development Specialist in the Career offices so it can get reviewed. Then make copies of it.

You can also ask questions about what employers want to see on a resume and how to get the employers most interested in you. Second, you need to get a business causal or professional outfit together. It’s best to do this now for two reasons: One, you can have an outfit ready and two, whoever has the best outfits wins the best dressed contest). And third, pick up a copy of the attending companies. Copies will be available one week before the fair so keep in mind the company’s you want to talk to.

Now, you’re ready for the fair. You’re looking nice and you have your resumes in hand. What are you prepared to do? Like mentioned before, when you go to the fair you can win best dress when you wear your business casual or professional clothing. You can also hand out your nicely revised resumes to the eager employers and this is when networking becomes important. Talk to the employers let them know your goals, interests and be enthusiastic. Show them that you are very interested in the jobs they have to offer. If you find one you like, try setting up an interview. You have no idea where it can lead and the doors that can open up if you do. Once the fair is over be sure to write to the employers at the fair. Contact them after the fair to show them that you are still interested and thank them for their time. A little respect can go a long way. So get yourself ready. Let’s go to the fair.
