RWC students will have the opportunity to participate in one of three possible study abroad programs in the summer of 2008. The programs, which will be set in England, Costa Rica, and Germany, will include four different courses. Students who choose to take part in the 12th Annual RWC British Study Program will have the opportunity to spend three and a half weeks in Great Britain. The program will focus on the theme of evolution and will offer two courses: a freshman level Biology course, “Evolution: History and Processes,” to be taught by Professor Mark Otten, and a Creative Writing course titled “The Evolutionary Self,” which will be taught by Professor Mike Roos.
While in England, students will stay at Harlaxton Manor, which is located about 100 miles north of London and which is described by Professor Roos as a “spectacular setting for a study abroad program.” Roos and Otten plan several field trips for the group, including visits to the Sedgwick Museum in Cambridge and the British Museum of Natural History in London. In addition to this, students will have two free weekends, giving them the opportunity to travel wherever they wish. For more information, contact Professor Mike Roos at (513) 745-5764 or email michael.roos@uc.edu.
If your aim is to perfect your Spanish language skills, the program held in Costa Rica is for you. Students taking part in the “Latin American Culture and Civilization” course will be completely immersed in not only the Spanish language, but in the culture of Costa Rica as well. As with the British Program, there will be several field trips, including a trip to the Manuel Antonio National Park. For more information about the Costa Rican Study Abroad Program, contact Professor Deborah Themudo at (513) 936-7140 or email themuddm@ucrwcu.rwc.uc.edu.
The program in Ilmenau, Germany, which is still tentative at this stage, would be an intensive study of German language and culture and is for those who have had at least a year of German. For more information, contact Professor Debbie Page at (513) 745-5679 or email deborah.page@uc.edu.
