In 2011, RWC will be providing students three options to explore the world. Study abroad programs have now been finalized and are awaiting students to take advantage of the opportunity in Quebec, Costa Rica, or Great Britain. The Great Britain program, titled “Charles Darwin and the Beatles: Evolution and Revolution,” is headed by professors Mark Otten of the RWC Biology Department and Mike Roos of the RWC English Department. A component from each department is optional for participation in the program, which will include two weeks at Harlaxton Manor in England as well as stays in Liverpool and London. Students can enroll in either or both of the following courses: Evolution: History and Processes (28-BIOL-296) or Creative Writing: The Beatles and Cultural Evolution in the 60’s (28-ENGL-296).
Field trips planned include Down House (the home of Charles Darwin), Cambridge University, the Beatles hometown of Liverpool, Abbey Road Studios, the British Library (to see original Beatles manuscripts), and the London Museum of Natural History. Students will also be provided with independent travel time during weekends. More information about deadlines, important dates and expenses can be found at www.rwc.uc.edu/saec/great_britain.html. Experiencing the natural beauty of Costa Rica through 40 hour language courses to excursions throughout national parks and rain forests provides students with a taste how Costa Ricans live day to day. This study abroad program requires a prerequisite of one year of university-level Spanish or equivalent. During the two weeks in Costa Rica, students will engage in study and experience Costa Rica through 40 hours of language classes. They will also participate in a homestay with a Costa Rican family.
The course in Latin American Civilization (28-SPAN-261) will be taught completely in Spanish and will consist of two components: daily morning classes at an Intercultural Language Institute and afternoon excursions with Professor Angie Woods of the RWC Foreign Language Department.
