What Are You Reading? Mark Z. Danielewski’s “House of Leaves

RWC student Will Kendrick, Liberal Arts, has recently finished “House of Leaves,” by Mark Z. Danielewski.Kendrick describes the author’s metaphysically experimental debut yarn as “a fantastic labyrinth of a novel that’s as terrifying as it is fun to read.”

In this intricately layered horror novel, Johnny Truant, an apathetic slacker, finds, in the apartment of a dead blind man, a strange manuscript, and tries to organize the pieces. The work consists of notes on a documentary by one Will Navidson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning news photographer.

The film chronicles the strange events in Navidson’s new Ash Tree Lane home, where the inside of the house is discovered to be larger than the outside-and continues to grow.

Those who enjoy the novel should read Danielewski’s follow-up, the companion novella “The Whalestoe Letters.
