You’ve seen her. She’s everywhere- at school, at the club or at the movies. She’s wearing skin-tight pants and one false move will dislodge her double barrels, if you know what I mean. She merits eye rolls and jokes delivered behind her back. Sure, she’s a funny figure. But, she begs the question: what’s the difference between confident and trampy?
It’s tempting to say that one’s tramp-level is based on how much snakeskin you wear or how low cut your dress is. Maybe it’s based on how many drinks you’re holding or how much booty is showing while you wear your shorts (emphasis on the shorts?).
This question is one I’ve pondered for ages. How is it that two women can wear the same dress and only one is a stunner, while the other just looks foolish? The answer is actually pretty simple and it sheds light upon one of the most important (though underrated) rules of fashion: sometimes, it’s not what you wear- it’s how.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s certainly a line. There’s no reason to walk the boulevard dressed like a streetwalker. But, the difference between looking like a streetwalker and looking like a prude is simply about your perspective. Are you dressing hot to find a man?
Or are you dressing hot because it makes you feel good? Just use some common sense and have a little pride.
Dress for you. If wearing a certain dress makes you feel like you just walked off of the cover of Vogue: do it. People come and go, but, you will always have you.
Yes, you might stumble a few times. But dressing confidently has nothing to do with how tight your dress is, or how revealing your top is. Dressing confidently just means that whatever you’re wearing makes you stand a little taller.
It should make you strut everywhere you go. It should brighten your day. Because in the end, what you wear is just an outward of expression of you as a person.
So wear what you wear because YOU like it; because it makes YOU feel sexy.
Until next time, stay classy. Stay stylish. This is Josh Newman, signing off.
