How to be wise and safe on the Clifton campus

We hope that graduating or transferring RWC students continue their education within the University of Cincinnati. We also hope that our present students visit the uptown campus to see the new recreation center complex, watch a sporting event, attend a theatrical event at CCM, or just enjoy taking an additional class on the main campus. Safety is a main concern at the uptown campus, so we would like to educate students on what is available when spending time on the uptown campus.

UC Police is located in the Edwards Center, on Corry Street, near the baseball field. UC Police is the third largest police department in Hamilton County. There are sixty plus sworn police officers, over forty-five security officers, and student campus watch who patrol throughout the campuses. UC also has its own dispatch center to handle campus calls.

UC Police patrol both the West Campus and the East Campus, which includes the University Hospital. Twelve cameras are mounted throughout the campuses and are recorded in the communication center. There are 240 blue help phones throughout the campuses and area of rescue phones also located in many stairwells.

UC Police has a working partnership with the Cincinnati Police, and university officers patrol not only campus but on the overlap of a three block radius around campus. They provide motorists assistance 24 hours a day within the three block radius around campus with a valid student ID.

Be aware that the student code of conduct holds students responsible for their behavior on campus as well as up to 2600 feet off campus, which averages two and a half blocks from campus.

Other services to assist our students include a campus shuttle, which runs 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. between West and East campuses (556-4424) and Nightwalk, which is a volunteer program that provides transportation to students 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursdays-Saturdays (558-WALK).

Student Government has also proposed a Clifton shuttle service for next year to assist with the services that Nightwalk presently provides.

Other safety tips to incorporate regularly include the following:

1. Do not leave your books or other items unattended. Mark your books so you can identify them.

2. Never leave valuables in plain view in your vehicle and lock your vehicle.

3. Park in well-lit areas and walk in pairs if possible or use a shuttle service.

4. Carry a cell phone in your hand to have ready if you need it as well as your keys.

5. Be aware of your surroundings and where the help phones are to assist you more quickly.

The UC Police office is located at Edwards 315 West Cory Street and includes lost and found, keys, and ID cards. The office also provides maps and shuttle schedules.

Parking for free is available as part of your benefit to currently enrolled students at RWC prior to 3 p.m. for two hours and anytime after 3 p.m. on the Clifton campus, with the exception of CCM garage. A copy of your paid schedule will be needed with your university ID.
