The RWC Biology and Chemical Science Departments are jointly sponsoring an effort to boost enrollment in the Laboratory Technology program. The Lab Tech program offers three options with a specialization in either a Chemical, Environmental, or, offered for the first time this year, a Biochemical field.
Each program is designed to be completed in two years, with internship opportunities at reputable local companies that could extend that time. Armed with an Associate of Applied Science degree, graduates can expect to enter a field where the number of jobs available reportedly far exceeds the number of qualified applicants in the Greater Cincinnati area. Individuals already possessing a bachelor’s degree can complete a one-year program and earn a professional certificate in Laboratory Technology. Furthermore, the starting salary for those who pursue a career in Lab Technology falls in the range of $25K to $30K or higher.
For students interested in the chemical branch of the program, opportunities exist for laboratory technicians in the fields of chemistry, biology, toxicology, pathology, and pharmacology. RWC graduates are employed by Procter and Gamble, Hilton-Davis Chemical Company, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, and Eli Lilly, among others.
Students enrolled in the program with a Biochemical emphasis can anticipate working in biomedical and cancer research, molecular and cell biology, pharmaceutical research, and production or genomics. As concern for environmental preservation broadens, so too do opportunities in the Environmental Control & Protection field. Graduates of this program have been hired by area employers such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Procter & Gamble, and the Southwestern Ohio Air Pollution Control Division, to name a few.
Students interested in pursuing any of the aforementioned degrees should contact Enrollment Services or either the Biology or Chemical Sciences Departments.
