The University of Cincinnati and Xi’an International Studies University (XISU) will offer a summer Chinese class from June 11 to July 16, 2007, in Xi’an, China. According to RWC Professor Shaorong Huang, who is helping coordinate the program, this is a program for students who have successfully completed a minimum of one year of college-level Mandarin Chinese or equivalent course work. The prospective student also needs to be in good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA).
Students who take this summer class will earn a total of eight credit hours in language and culture from UC. The estimated cost for Ohio residents is $3950, which covers tuition, room, board, roundtrip airfare and airport pick-ups. It also includes some sight-seeings in Beijing and Xi’an, Professor Huang said. However, if students want to visit places that are not arranged by the program organizer, they will have to pay extra. Information on the program is available at www.uc.edu/global.
XISU is one of over 30 universities in the city of Xi’an. It started its Chinese programs for foreign learners in 1977. Now, it offers regular Chinese classes and short-term language training classes for students from America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Xi’an is a major city in China’s northwest region, with a population of eight million. “As a capital for 11 ancient dynasties, Xi’an attracts millions of tourists from all over the world,” Professor Huang said. The famous site of the Terra Cotter Warriors is about 20 miles from XISU.
