The UC general education program: what’s it all about?

The University of Cincinnati has implemented a new General Education Program. How does this affect Raymond Walters College students? It doesn’t, except for those who entered the University in the autumn of 2001.

Any freshman who entered UC in Autumn 2001 or after and plans to graduate in 2005 or after with a baccalaureate degree must complete the program.

There are, however, no requirements to obtain an associates degree, meaning that students do not have to have all of the Gen. Ed. classes completed by graduation from RWC.

There are four competencies which students must develop: critical thinking, effective communication, knowledge integration, and social responsibility. These competencies will be ensured through Breadth of Knowledge (BoK) course requirements, as well as program/major requirements.

Does this mean that students will need to take extra classes to graduate? No, it doesn’t. There are no additional coursework requirements beyond the program requirements of a major. This means that students will be completing BoK course requirements by taking classes they already need.

If you have any questions, contact either RWC Professor Evelyn Brod, who is a member of the UC General Education Steering Committee; RWC Associate Dean Don O’Meara, a consultant for the committee; RWC Professor Marlene Miner, or RWC Professor Julie Mitchell, both representatives to the committee. General Education Program booklets are also available in the Admissions Office with answers to questions.
