The RWC Nursing Department recently held an essay contest on the topic of Caring in Nursing, and the winner was first-year student Crystal Mathews. Her prize was the opportunity to see Dr. Patch Adams at his “Joy of Caring” speech. In his speech he talked about his belief that caring for people “should be person-centered rather than system-driven.” You might know Dr. Patch Adams from the movie based on his life, starring Robin Williams. Dr. Adams cured with laughter.
The essay contest was open to all students in the Nursing Program and was based on a lecture on Caring done by Professor Jennifer Ellis.
Mathews’ essay showed how deep passion and caring are a true part of healing. The contest was offered with the support of Episcopal Retirement Homes.
