UCBA Students React to the Umpqua Shooting
A collection of student perspectives
UCBA Student Olivia Fenner- “The shooting that happened in Oregon had me terrified as soon as I heard the news, I didn't want to go school the following day because I didn’t feel safe. But a shooting like that can happen anywhere; it just seems to hit home with a lot more impact because I feel like I can relate since I go to community college. The shooting in Oregon is a reminder to keep on the look-out for students who could pose as a threat to campus.”
UCBA anonymous United Kingdom transfer student- “I’m from the UK so I’m actually used to the idea of guns being completely illegal. So this is what we would consider the result of people having and going crazy with their second amendments.”
UCBA Student Lauren Jennings- "It kind of makes you scared of your classmates. You want to assume everyone is a well-intentioned person, but when things like this happen you tend to look over your shoulders more. I guess we have to take small steps to improve school safety since we don't know what bad actions people may be planning.”
UCBA anonymous student- “Honestly, I don’t know all the details, what led up to the shooting, who was involved, and what exactly all the details are but its pretty terrible. I’m actually against gun control but I do think that maybe more regulations can be preventative and help curtail this in the future. And its pretty tough to talk about being that we’re college students and all. And that it can happen to us.”
UCBA anonymous student- “I know what happened but not all the details. What I have heard was it was just a tragic incident that I wish hadn’t happened. I believe it is a huge problem we need to work on. I am not really sure whether I am against gun control or not. I do think there should be at least a few more restrictions on it all. I don’t find it scary or worrying to myself unless it were to happen here or at a school near by.
