Techno World: Apple's New iPad Mini Creates Inner Conflict
My family has been an Apple shareholder for most my life. My dad claims that he hasn't sold his stock, but for the first time he is strongly considering it.
My mom recently purchased the highly anticipated iPad Mini. "It was too cheap ($329) not to give in to the curiosity," she says.
So when my mom tells me she purchased the new device, of course, I was eager to go home and play with the new toy, and my mom let me borrow it for the weekend.
First, I wanted to know if it's more compelling or more useful than the high-end iPad that I already have. Here's my list of pro's and con's:
1. Some people say they don't mind the grainier screen, but I do. If I had a choice, I would pick up the bigger iPad with the high-resolution screen. The iPad Mini feels like a bulky Verizon phone.
2. What about using the iPad Mini as a traveling computer? Well, there too I would go for the larger iPad, because it has LTE, which is a standard for wireless communication or high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. It's very functional, so I keep it in my book bag when I go out. I switch it over from Wi-Fi to LTE when I go out. I turned on Bluetooth, so that my iPhone has a way to get on Wi-Fi. The iPad Mini could be a replacement for the iPod, I guess. But it's too large to fit in my pocket.
3. The low-resolution screen is the most misleading component for iPad Mini. The screen is far more intense in saturation and vividness than other Apple products, plus it's lighter and equally fast. I don't care how specs are written, but in essence the iPad Mini exceeds any device I know at this moment. In this case size does matter and the ratio, weight, performance, and screen are the best on the market.
4. Apple reviewers seemed to miss one of the biggest downfalls of this device-the shape of the screen. As we know, most movies are in 16:9 format, so when watching a video on this device, you have a black bar covering about 40 percent of the screen, unless you like to watch things zoomed in so you can only see the middle of the picture, with the resolution screwed up because of the zoom. Sure, it looks better than any other device, but in terms of watching media, it is probably the worst 7-inch device available.
5. Some features are just features, like a camera, but the resolution of a display isn't a feature. It's integral to the product. It's like trying to sell a car with a fuzzy windshield. Everything you do with the Mini is a reminder that you could be using a nicer product. Always having the nicest thing is what Steve Jobs's Apple stood for.
In conclusion, the iPad Mini is manufactured like an oversized phone, rather than a compatible pad device. The main pro to this device is that it is in a league of its own, and it's dramatically cheaper than most pads on the market now.
The price is extremely surprising for Apple, but I'm not complaining. I would suggest consumers buy this product only if you do not have an iPhone, or if you don't want to spend so much on an iPad. It definitely shouldn't be your everyday functional device, the way the regular iPad is for many people.
Now if only my mom would give me this iPad Mini to keep.
