Why study journalism?
By Dae'Shawn Gordon
Someone once asked me...
Someone once asked me my major and I told that someone that I was a journalism major. They asked me, "Why, there's no money in a journalism career. Besides people don't read print anymore." This not only made me upset but made me think, why wouldn't anyone read me, why is journalism so important to me?
I turned to the internet, a quick way to find answers and I began to realize that millions, billions of people use this medium every day to read what's going on in their community, read sport stories, browse through the classifieds, and get updates on current events. Whether from a paper or off a screen, people want their information. Journalism is the bridge between you and what's going on in the world around you. It's a very important way to communicate the ideas, thoughts and beliefs of those around us as well. These thoughts and beliefs belong to people like you and I. What good is a country that's built on freedom of speech if the people don't embrace it and express themselves?
For these people journalism is more than letters on a paper. It's what those letters represent that is important. Those words may express thoughts and feelings of those who may not have a voice to express them on their own. If I can be the voice of so many whether it can be print or print media, it would be an honor. In my pursuit of being a better journalist, listening to others and see the world through the eyes of someone else is essential when delivering today's information. It's not about money it's about making a career out of something that I love to do. So the same question that was asked to me as to why I'm a journalism major I answered by responding, "Because I love hearing from the world around us, and being the voice of so many people. If one person never reads me I know that my words still carry the weight of so many people."
Media and everyday life
By Zach Lucas
In our generation, media has made a very special place for itself in our daily lives. There is no denial that media is playing a significant role in making the world smaller. Through various mediums of media whether it is radio, television, newspaper or internet, we are able to connect with large number of people around us which was unimaginable before. Besides connecting us with our friends, media also informs us about the world happenings. I think that media is like a mirror of the society which reflect everything about society to us. Journalists from television and print take many risks to inform us about important news. I think it is almost impossible to imagine life without media.
Media has a huge responsibility of conveying the truth and relevant information to the people. Somehow this seems to be taking a back seat for journalists as they are now focusing more on material interests, but there are still some people in media who are trying to maintain the media's dignity.
Media is not just confined to informing us about information and serving a means to connect with people, it also affects our thinking patterns as well. The way we think and perceive various issues about the world is also shaped by the media. The same story could be covered on 3 different news stations and all of them could give you a different idea of what happened.
When it comes to media, how can one forget to talk about the entertainment industry? Be it movies, radio, internet or whatever, media is everywhere in our life. Today entertainment is so easily available that every common person is able to afford it. Music and movies are so available to us through the internet that people don't even have to pay to use them anymore.
If we looked around we would see there are many aspects of our life which are touched by media whether it is our work, relationships or entertainment. Media is everywhere.
Media as a double-edged sword
By Gabrielle Sims
The media is a double edged sword. It make no moves to help save people and no hesitation not to throw someone under a bus. Media today is all about getting the most money out of people. For example, it showcases reality television and high priced products. If you are a bad girls club fan, you can purchase a towel with the bad girls club signal on it for only 24.99 plus shipping (yea who doesn't need a thirty dollar pink towel with a black heart with horns on it).
the main reason some people fall prey to meaningless things such as these is because of subliminal messages. there everywhere from commercials to hidden in songs and even in perfect billboards. Have you ever wondered why you see so many fast food commercials on the television at night? Those commercials are purposely played to influence us. We retain more information before we go to sleep so more likely if you seen a ad for Taco Bell you might have an urge to get it the following day. Media can give us fact or it can give us trash. Truly when it comes down to it, the media is what we as people make it out to be.
