Fashion: Finding Your Personal Style

By Lauren Berry
On December 1, 2014

We all have our own personal style and unique way of dressing, right?  But we all get our inspiration for our outfits from somewhere.  So I decided to ask three different people to describe their personal style in one word and where they got their style from.

Everyone has developed his or her style from somewhere in the past and pretty much stuck with it.  Whether it was from a celebrity or just someone on the street, we all get it from somewhere.

The first person I interviewed was definitely not shy about her style.  It was noticeable to me what her style was already, but I wanted to hear what she had to say.

I asked her what her style was in one word, and she replied, “Hippie.”  Then I asked her where she got her style from, and she said, “I grew up in a country area, so the only people around were hippies and cowboys.  I just latched on to the hippies.”

The next person I interviewed was a really shy guy I knew in one of my classes, and he agreed to be in the school paper after some convincing.  I asked how he would describe his personal style in one word, and he replied, “Comfort.”

He seemed a little nervous in this interview, but he was slightly loosening up.  Then I asked where he got his style from.  I was kind of surprised by what he said.  “I grew up with a big family so we didn’t have much money, so whatever was warm or comfortable is what my mom bought us for clothes.  But when my mom passed away, I kept this style in remembrance of her.”  I was touched by his response.

The last person I talked to was another random person.  She told me her personal style was “preppy.”  She was wearing a button-up white shirt and a navy blue bubble vest with pearls as an accent.  I used to dress like that, so I was immediately interested in where she got her style from.

She replied, “It took me forever to find my personal style.  When I entered high school, I tried everything!  I hung out with everyone to find out where I fit in, but since I couldn’t find a group where I fit in, I just went to the mall and looked around, and this is what was like second nature to me.”

When she said that, I could relate, because that’s exactly how I felt when trying to find my personal style.

After interviewing all the people, I really sat down and thought about where I got my personal style, and why it makes me who I am.  A lot of people think their style doesn’t have anything to do with who they are as a person, but it does.

Like the second person I interviewed, who said he got his style from his mother, your style is another story about who you are and how you act—your style, your way.
