My World: The Real Refs Return
Before the NFL season even started, everyone knew that the official referees were going to be on a lockout. But people didn't know how long the lockout for the regular officials was going to last.
So as the pre-season had passed by, the referees, in my eyes, called the games pretty well. That was only pre-season though, so when the real season started, that was the real test for the replacement referees.
For the first couple of weeks of the regular season, all you could hear about on ESPN was how the referees missed this call or shouldn't have thrown a flag on that play. It was just a whole bunch of chaos.
Players and coaches were getting upset at referees because some of those calls cost them games. So both players and coaches were trying to get acquainted with how these referees called the games.
One of the most intriguing games in my eyes for the replacement referees was the Seahawks and Packers game. I believe the game had some poor officiating, because some of the calls would not have been made by regular officials.
At press time, the NFL has just finalized a deal with the real referees for an eight-year contract. So after week three we now have real referees officiating games, and players, coaches, and fans will be happy that the games will be called properly-more or less.
