Let's Have a Conversation About Safe Sex
If one is taking a trigonometry class and has not taken any math courses in years, he or she will struggle. However, every day, pupils are forced to rely on information that they learned years ago in middle school or high school when it comes to having safer sex.
Many, if not most, college students are either sexually active or have been in the past. Since we are (nearly) all adults at UCBA, this is to be expected. Despite this undeniable fact, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy states that only two out of ten community college students have received information from their college on pregnancy prevention.
One simple way to minimize the risk of unwanted pregnancies while reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is using condoms. I believe that making condoms available benefits the population in many ways.
What is someone like me to do? This autumn, I was selected as a SafeSite for the Great American Condom Campaign (GACC). As a member of this grassroots movement, my goal is to distribute over 500 male condoms to UCBA students, free of charge.
So far, I have discussed my plans to create a club dedicated to promoting safer sex with UCBA's Student Life Office. As much as I appreciate their support, I need other members to get my plans off the ground.
Helping to establish this club would not just look good on a resume, but it would bolster the health of our community. If you are in the least bit interested, please get in touch with me at krawecmg@mail.uc.edu.
