NFL Season to Feature Talented Rookie Quarterbacks

By James Crawford
On September 24, 2012

There are five rookie starting quarterbacks in the National Football League this season. This very talented rookie class of quarterbacks will make an instant impact on their respective teams. The 2012-13 football season is mostly going to be highlighted around them. The first couple of weeks have been hard for some of those rookie quarterbacks, but others have had some exceptional starts to their NFL careers.
The first week of the 2012 season started with a bang. Robert Griffin III's stats were amazing for a first game for a rookie. Robert was 19-26 passing and threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns. Even more impressive is that he was also the first rookie quarterback not to throw an interception in his first start.
Andrew Luck, on the other hand, had an okay first game. He was 23-45, threw for 309 yards, and one touchdown with three interceptions. The Colts lost their first game to the Bears 21-41. Luck really didn't get a lot of protection in the pocket, so he didn't have much time to throw the ball.
Other rookie quarterbacks, such as Russell Wilson and Ryan Tannehill, had not so good games the first week. Those two quarterbacks played very mediocre in their first games, but that's how quarterbacks in their first game are supposed to perform. Rookies normally have a hard time in their first game, so they can grow.
The ones who don't struggle are either very talented and smart or just lucky. In others words quarterbacks have probably the hardest job on the field, and putting a rookie quarterback in a game is like putting a kid on a bike for the first time.
Brandon Weeden, the quarterback of the Browns, had a terrible day, throwing for only 118 yards, completing only 12-35, and compiling a lowly 5.1 rating. That's one of the worst outings ever by an NFL quarterback.
Rookies can have an up and down first year, meaning that they may have good games and some bad games. So getting them out there early so that they can learn is key.
These five quarterbacks will all have different types of careers because of their playing styles and learning progressions. The coaches will have their hands full for at least four years, getting these quarterbacks prepared for the big games.
