UCBA Offering Three Study Abroad Programs in 2013
UCBA is offering three different Study Aboard courses in 2013, which will take students to Britain, Costa Rica, or Gaudeloupe.
The trip to Britain actually begins in Prague, Czech Republic, and then moves through Vienna, Austria, before going to Harlaxton Manor in England and including a stay in London. Led by professors Ruth Benander and Debbie Page, the program will offer students the option of taking one or two three-credit courses: a literature course on Gothic horror and surrealism and a course on German culture (German language not required). The program will run from May 5-June 1, 2013, and is expected to cost approximately $3,900.
The trip to Costa Rica covers Spanish language and Latin American culture and includes living with a Costa Rican family and volunteering in a public school. Professor Angie Woods will lead the program, which will run from May 5 to May 19, 2013. The cost is expected to be approximately $2,500. A year of college-level Spanish or equivalent is required for participation.
Finally, the trip to Guadeloupe, which will be an optional part of the Spring Semester course Contemporary Social Problems, will examine social problems in the French West Indies. You will earn a total of four credits for this program. To participate you must register for the three-credit hour course, SOC2043, Contemporary Social Problems, which will meet during Spring Semester. At the same time that you register for SOC2043, you must also register for the one-credit hour course, FREN2090, Service Learning in French. During the Spring Semester, you will spend Spring Break, March 15-23, 2013, in Guadeloupe.
Possible projects include Infrastructure Rebuilding, Elementary Schools, Medicinal Gardens, and Local Fishermen.
Leslie Elrod is the instructor for SOC2043, Contemporary Social Problems. For further information on this course, you may contact Professor Elrod at Leslie.Elrod@uc.edu or 513-936-7125.
