Calling All Greeks

By Caitlin Hauff and Katelyn Hirsch
On April 16, 2012

Greek life at The University of Cincinnati is more than just the frat shades or Sperry addicts. It's about the Greek Community as a whole coming together to support a great cause. Every year during Spring Quarter, a weeklong Philanthropy event is held to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

This year events start on April 16. The theme for this year is "Hollywood Edition," which means anything Hollywood related. The weeklong events consist of different activities that all Greek Organizations partake in. There are competitions such as lip sync (a dance competition), Greek sing, and a step competition.

At the end of the night, you want to win first place. But in reality, as a whole, the Greek Community can say they accomplished their main goal, which is the money they raise for Greek Week that goes towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year the total raised during Greek Week was $53,404. This year's the goal is $55,000. Each chapter in the Greek Community is fighting to be the chapter to raise the most money towards this goal, as well as being the Premiere Chapter of the Year.

What does Greek life have to do with the University of Cincinnati as a whole? Well, there are approximately 1,800 students who belong to forty-three difference student organizations at the University of Cincinnati. This includes thirty-six Fraternities and Sororities, three Fraternity and Sorority Life-specific honor societies, and four governing councils.

What do all of the fraternities and sororities have in common? This question is very simple to answer; they all share a perpetual bond between each other that can't ever be broken. Yes, everyone reading this article may think that frats and sororities just get "drunk" every night and have a good time. But that is not true. They share a very unique brotherhood/sisterhood that no other can obtain. Sororities and Fraternities have different rituals and philanthropic interests that include St. Jude (Delta Delta Delta), Casa (Beta Theta Pi), and Make-A-Wish (Chi Omega).

Greek life is about Fraternal Men and Women to coming together to better the community. Maybe you should consider going Greek!
