"60 Minutes" Journalist Mike Wallace Dies at 93
On Saturday April 7, 2012, CBS lost another iconic newsman with the death of Mike Wallace in New Canaan, Connecticut at the age of 93. Wallace is considered to be one of journalism's greatest personalities and has won many prestigious awards. In his 60-year career as a journalist and interviewer, Mike Wallace won over 20 Emmy Awards, including a lifetime achievement Emmy in 2003.
Wallace began his career in radio broadcasting for small radio stations, but eventually went to work for the CBS radio network in the late 1940's. Wallace's 37-year career as a journalist and interviewer for 60 Minutes ended, for the most part, with his retirement in 2006 at the age of 88, but Wallace would continue contributing stories and interviews to the show for another two years. Wallace's interviewing style and dedication to finding the truth helped to make 60 Minutes a respected and widely popular news program in America.
The death of Mike Wallace marks the second loss of a long-time member of the 60 Minutes Alumni in less than six months, following the death of Andy Rooney on November 4, 2011, at the age of 92. If there is a bright side to the deaths of such great newsmen, especially to anyone aspiring to become a journalist, it is seeing the longevity and vitally that comes from a life spent doing something that makes such a lasting and integral contribution to the world.
