UC Smiles Showcases Campus, Dental Health
On Friday, November 16, the UC Smiles Program held their Dental Plus Care Group event for North College Hill students (grades 5-8). In this program, the children took a tour of the UCBA campus and attended classes to encourage their dream for a future education beyond high school. It was also an opportunity for children to get access to dental care.
After an introduction by Dean Cady Short-Thompson, the children were led by the Dental Hygiene Clinic and divided into groups to attend the following classes: Roadmap to College Workshop (Chris Powers), Chemistry and Your Teeth (Dr. Scott Tremain), Nutrition and Dietary Myths Workshop (Dr. Frank Wray), and the Brian Journey Workshop (Behavioral Science Students). The afternoon was then closed by Dean Cady Short-Thompson.
During the children's visit, they were also informed about other programs offered at UCBA, to give them an idea of what they want to do in the future. There was also a discussion of financial aid and how children can help themselves for the future by doing well in school today.
The UC Smiles program is coordinated by Cynthia Bellinger of the UCBA Center for Corporate Learning, with assistance from Professor Daphne Percy (Behavioral Science-Education), Professor Deborah Frame (Behavioral Science-Psychology) and Pre-Health Education student Ana Montalvan.
