New Advising Policy Set Up for Freshmen

By Henry Haskamp

According to Mark Miller, UCBA Director of Academic Advising, new freshman students will have to meet with an advisor before they can register for class for next term.
All freshman students had to meet with an advisor to register for fall classes and will have to do so again to register for both upcoming spring and fall semesters, Miller said.
This is a program recommended by UC's Main Campus. Most colleges there require the policy, because it helps students stay connected with an advisor and encourages them to meet them and get on the right track to graduate quickly.
According to Miller, there are large numbers of students who are self-advising, registering on their own, and not checking in with an advisor. This program is an effort to fix that, he said, as well as increase retention rates.
The next step for the college is to require something for students on academic probation, Miller added.
The current policy is that students are placed on academic probation if they don't have at least a 2.0 GPA after 30 credit hours. There is currently no plan of required visitations set up for those students at this time.
