UC Smiles Hopes to Inspire Children

Dental care is the No. 1 unmet health care need of children in Ohio, according to Oral Health in America: A Report of the U.S. General Surgeon, 2003. More than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illnesses. To help prevent this, UCBA has developed a program called UC Smiles.
This program has two main purposes, designed to inspire and inform children that a college education is attainable and that aiding area children in their need for access to dental care is possible.
The children not only get a tour of the UCBA campus, but they are also encouraged to dream about their future education. Dr. Scott Tremain, as well as a number of faculty and students in the UCBA Chemistry Department, has been working with elementary kids who are a part of the UC Smiles program.
The Department offers a one-hour hands-on activity to engage the children. To learn more about the program, visit http://www.ucblueash.edu/ucsmiles/purpose.html
