Talk Explores Plight of Migrant Workers
As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, UCBA hosted guest speaker Dr. José Salinas on October 10, to present information on the educational barriers many migrant child farmworkers face.
Salinas discussed such obstacles as lack of transportation for healthcare, inconsistency in academic progress due to travelling from location to location for essential work, basic living conditions, and low wages.
He also discussed the extreme 90 percent drop out rate of high school migrant students, and how their two weakest areas of study are math and English.
He then informed the audience of the educational services provided to children of migrant workers. These services are offered by the Ohio Migrant Education Center, where Salinas is Director.
He lastly shared areas in which college students can help children of migrant farmworkers, including volunteering at northeastern Ohio summer migrant worker camp sites, assisting in referring children of migrant worker programs, and assisting dental hygienists.
