War on Bedbugs Continues

By Donald Dunaway

In the past few years, the war on bedbugs has been a struggle that has plagued communities across America. Here on the UCBA campus, the most recent attack has been thwarted thanks to our diligent staff. This is not the first time that the pests have been discovered here and is not likely to be the last. Since there are so many people coming and going on campus, it is very easy for the insects to be transferred from one place to another. The presence of these bugs has nothing to do with cleanliness of either individuals or the campus itself.

The City of Cincinnati is arguably the bedbug capital of the entire nation, and while this may not be the most auspicious of titles, it does tend to explain why places in surrounding communities continue to battle with infestations. There are no sprays or poisons currently on the market that have any effective result on exterminating the bugs. In years past, chemicals such as DDT were used to kill bedbugs, but the pests have developed a resistance to these insecticides, not to mention the adverse effects that DDT has on other, non-threatening forms of life.

The only effective and environmentally friendly solution to bed bug eradication is the use of heat. Some extermination services are offering a treatment in which they raise the inside temperature above 120 degrees. This seems to kill the bugs and their eggs.

There are a lot of sites on the web offering how-to tips and selling equipment for the do-it yourselfers, but it is advisable to consult a professional before turning your entire home or business into a blast furnace.
