Study Skills Lab teaches learning to learn
The RWC Study Skills Lab is ready to help students with a variety of subjects, phobias, and problems in applying knowledge and getting the most out of any given lesson. The Lab teaches the concept of "Learning to Learn," a learning strategy designed to help students make the most of what they learn.
In high school, students are frequently taught things in bits and pieces, like how to memorize information, and sometimes they don't get enough out of the lesson.
The Study Skills Lab, on the other hand, attempts to teach students how to learn. Strategies of reading and test taking, as well as time management and how to effectively mark and highlight textbooks are all included in what the Lab teaches.
Accoring to Study Skills Tutor Leigh Lyons, tutors in the Lab also look at students' test mistakes and explain to students where they went wrong, so there is less chance of making the same mistakes again.
"If you are a poor learner, it doesn't matter how good or bad your professor is," Lyons said. Learning strategies are absorbed over time. People are not likely to wake up and know how to be better learners, just as they don't don't wake up one morning and realize they can swim.
The Study Skills Lab has classes and workshops designed to make students better learners, and to help them keep up with their work load. The also provides one-on-one tutoring.
"This isn't supposed to be something you're supposed to just know," Lyons said.
