An Engineering Major's Perspective on the Activist: Margaret Bush Reflects
Being as I am a Mechanical Engineering major, the last thing that someone would think is that writing is something I enjoy. Throughout this semester, I have been able to write about things that interest me, instead of a topic the professor came up with. Writing is a way of expression. I took this class to fill in a missing English credit, not because journalism interested me in anyway. Yet throughout this semester I enjoyed this writing style.
Although I am an engineer, writing will always be a part of whatever job I take, whether it is writing a summary about something, or writing emails. Writing is everywhere, and being able to write in a professional way is important in any major.
I have had a wonderful time working with the not so well known student newspaper the Activist. I’ve learned to work as a team with the other students in the class. This newspaper has a purpose, to inform students not only about what is happening on campus, but also about things happening outside our campus. I’ve gotten to learn a couple of interesting things about our college, and about some of the people who graduated from here. This whole semester has been enjoyable, and I am glad I could be able to work with the Activist.
This class offers freedom of writing how we feel about certain campus related subjects along with writing about things we are passionate about. I was able to write about some of the things that interest me on and off of campus. This class gives the students a voice that anyone who reads that Activist can hear. This class is much less about the format but about the information in the article. It is a certain style of writing that some people may enjoy more than other writing 5 page essays.
Having a student newspaper is important because it gives student a voice where they normally wouldn’t have one. It is also able to inform other students about things going on on campus from another student’s point of view. Normally the way students find out about things it from their professors and we hear about all of the great things to learn if we go to these different speakers, yet this newspaper tells the students what’s really happening.
