Stars Under the Stars
-Starlite Drive-In Theatre
Tired of overpaying to see one movie at the conventional theatre? The Starlite Drive-In theatre feels your pain. That's why they offer two popular, newly released movies for less than if you paid for one in the cinema. Not only is it a cheaper way to see your favorite flicks, but it is a way to watch them under the stars all summer long!
The Starlite Drive-In opened its doors in Amelia, Ohio 65 years ago and has been a staple for movie lovers ever since. They have everything you could want in a drive-in and more. Cheap, fresh concessions come wafting out of the little stand night after night ranging from old fashioned popcorn to hamburgers and giant pickles.
This year, they are even allowing you to bring food or drinks from outside for a flat five dollar fee. As soon as the sun sets, you can settle in your car or bring blankets and lawn chairs and sit outside as the previews begin. They have their own radio station so you can blare your car as loud as you want.
Admission is $7.00 per adult, $4.00 for children, and that's for TWO movies! (At Newport's AMC theatre, admission is $10.50 per adult for one movie.) The snacks are fairly cheap, but they do encourage buying lots of them because that's the only way they make their money.
As of now, the Starlite is only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but will run seven days a week after Memorial Day. The first movie usually starts around 9 o'clock, but you can get there as early as 7:30pm.
"I've been going to the Starlite ever since I was a little girl with my family. It's a great date idea too," says Kasey, a History major. "I love going to the drive-in! I just saw The Avengers there last weekend. It was awesome," says Amy, a Liberal Arts major.
The Starlite plans to keep going and going (being one of the last operating drive-ins, I'm sure it's a difficult task), and they need movie lovers to help. So, if you're one of them, give the Starlite a try and I bet it'll be a monthly routine for you by the start of summer.
You can see more information about the Starlite at http://www.starlitedriveinohio.com/ or call (513) 734-4001. They will be showing Chimpanzee May 11, 12, and 13 at 8:50 pm and The Avengers at 10:25 pm. The next week they will show Men in Black 3.
