Breast Cancer Awareness in the NFL
This October is the National Football League's Fourth Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Screening Initiative and Fundraising Campaign.
Also the NFL collaborates with the American Cancer Society, for a program called "A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives." This reminds women 40 and older the meaning of having an annual mammogram.
This partnership has raised $3 million for the American Cancer Society. Most of the donations are coming in from the sale of pink items at retail stores and NFL Auctions.
Breast cancer awareness has become a great success in the NFL. They have started wearing pink football gear to show their appreciation toward breast cancer awareness. On all the NFL teams you can see pink cleats, gloves, shoelaces, quarterback towels, sideline caps, captain patches, kicking tees, and skull caps--all for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The campaign's message is really making a big impact on women in the world. In 2011 alone, the NFL's "Crucial Catch Program" reached more than 151 million viewers, including 58 million women age 18 and older. That shows that people care when it comes to the health of others.
The message from this program has also made a tremendous impact on 64 percent of NFL female fans and 61 percent of NFL fans, who identify the importance of annual screenings. The key message is for women over the age of 40 years old to go get screened.
