Music: Berkeley Band WHY? Has Cincinnati Roots

If you haven't heard of WHY? (notated as Why With a Question Mark), then you should look them up.
WHY? is a unique indie hip-hop band started in Berkeley, California, with instrumentals and meaningfully interlaced rhymes that leave you feeling as if you just caught on to the real story behind the everyday scenes in someone's modern life.
Led by Cincinnati frontman Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf, alongside his brother Josiah Wolf, Josiah's wife, Liz Hodson, and bassist Doug Diarmud, WHY? produces some of the greatest sounds in the Western hemisphere.
Signed with Anticon., an independent label working with other underground acts, they've put out several LPs, such as "Alopecia," "Eskimo Snow," and a couple live albums. Their most recent work was released in August of this year, a catchy six-track EP called "Sod in the Seed."
Serving as a prelude to their upcoming album, "Mumps, Etc.," to be released on October 2, "Sod in the Seed" could be considered the most upbeat record produced by the group so far, throwing out well-composed lines that flaunt the boldness of an open-secret life mastered, such as "Purchased parkas from Marshalls at ridiculous markups/ Out at farmer's markets and high thread count garments / And on FourSquare this morning, like an old yoga yuppie/ I checked in at Krogers in a gold pullover toga like 'f--- it,'" taken from the final track on the album, "Shag Carpet."
Though WHY? won't be everyone's favorite band, they can't be dismissed as another typical indie rock group that tries too hard to sound "cool." Covering everything from private fears to the rise of becoming famous to love songs and themes taken from dreams, WHY? thinks and writes about everything you could imagine, or at least more so than the majority of pop groups on the market, while sounding just as skillfully produced and fixated on getting your attention, if not more so.
So check them out if you've got the time. If you're not willing to purchase an album just to hear them out, you can find "Sod in the Seed" for free on Soundcloud, Spotify, and various amazingly well-crafted music videos on Youtube.
If you'd prefer to get up close and personal, their first tour date following the release of their October album is actually in Cincinnati on October 18 at 8 p.m., located at the Contemporary Arts Center.
Tickets can be purchased for a measly $12. So if you're looking for a new band to open up your horizons, check out WHY? for a good fix.
