Local Band Belle Histoire Shoots for the Stars
Belle Histoire is a young, indie-pop alternative band whose infectious music is spreading locally and fast. The band came together in Cincinnati, and the members consist of Jane Smith (lead vocals/piano), Mitch Winsett (bass/vocals), Wes Comer (drums) and Austin Livingood (guitar/vocals).
Belle Histoire really completely formed only after their first EP, "Spirits" (2011). As a whole, they then continued on to their second EP, "I Can Tell" (2012), and released two creative and intriguing music videos for their top hits "Be Alright" and "Stay Awhile." These videos can both be found on YouTube.
The band's first album, "Dreamers," was released this year on InVogue Records and has soared since. Belle Histoire began touring in the Midwest with another band called Tallhart, from Florida. The group hopes to continue touring sometime next year.
In Belle Histoire's songs, the background harmonies by other members definitely add character, including the occasional claps and "whoa-ohs." But the strongest way Belle Histoire stands out among other indie-pop bands is through their lead vocalist, Jane Smith. This girl's powerful pipes can get any one of the band's catchy songs stuck in your head for days and can easily emphasize the tone being given off more specifically.
Jane is also the one who writes the songs and comes up with the melodies, with a little help from the other three members every now and then. Each song holds a message, whether it's about a lover, a friend, or herself. One of the more popular songs from Dreamers, "Keep Your Heart," is a good example of a song that is more personal, considering it almost sounds like a letter to a friend. The opening song, "Don't Run Away," is personally my favorite-the kind you could play in your car over and over.
Jane states, "I want people to enjoy what we do so much that they want to enjoy what they do as well. I want us to be positive and a band that can keep someone's mood up on a bad day."
Belle Histoire did a great job of constructing the album, with a good balance of slow and upbeat songs. They are relatable and honest enough to continue drawing listeners in for more. I highly recommend checking them out; you will not be disappointed!
