Sharon Draper's Copper Sun provides a glimpse into the past
The book I would like to introduce to you is an exceptional story call Copper Sun by Sharon Draper. This book's connection to the past makes you feel like there is nothing you can't overcome. Those who love to read won't be able to put this book down because once you start the story your fingers won't be able to leave the pages.
Amari, a fifteen year old girl, is snatched, beaten, and branded. She is sold into slavery and given as present to the slave owner's son Clay. Amari finds friendship in a white indentured servant named Polly who is also working on the same plantation as Amari to pay off the debts her parents left. Together they both decide to achieve what they both want the most: freedom. And when the first opportunity comes, they intend to take it. The cook's son Tidbit is also added to their journey because the master's anger knows no bounds.
Together these three will make a journey not only to save their lives but to bring them closer to freedom. The copper sun rising in the east and setting in the west is the best monument to guide them to it. Copper Sun provides knowledge of what slaves had to deal with and gives readers today a glimpse into the past.
