Businesses Need to Stand Against a Bad Law
Maybe you haven’t been paying attention, but just last week Indiana Republican Governor Mike Pence signed a bill allowing businesses in the state to deny service to the LGBT community for “religious beliefs.”
A similar bill was signed in the State of Arkansas. Laws of this nature scream discrimination, but they try to mask the true agenda by hiding behind religion. It’s amazing that in 2015 our government still tries to do things like this. The sadder part is that there is a large group of Indiana residents that agree with the law.
These days there is no place for any discrimination of any kind, no matter whom it is being directed towards. The signing of the bill is being met with great opposition, with people all over the country speaking out against it.
In the social media age, what would a cause be without a hashtag? So a group came up with #BoycottIndiana.
Beyond this bill being discriminatory, it lacks intelligence as well. I mean, what respectable, profitable business would stand behind this bill? Even if they agreed with it, they wouldn’t say that publicly because they aim to protect their businesses.
In this country money is the only thing that truly matters. People tend to put their personal differences aside for the sake of the dollar.
The Indiana Pacers and Fever have made a statement saying they have no intention to go along with the bill. That was the only move they had. I expect the Indianapolis Colts to release a similar statement in the very near future.
If enough businesses come out against the bill, the state government in Indiana will have no choice but to repeal the bill. Situations like this reinforce the importance in voting. We can’t allow things like this to happen when we have total control over who makes our decisions.
